APRIL CHALLENGE: IMAGE TRANSFER—KATE MASON
I’m going to experiment with laser prints, ink jet colour prints, ink jet photo prints and magazine pages. Hopefully, you’ll have at least one of these at your disposal.
As I am focussing my mixed media challenges around dolls, I’ll be collaging my image transfer pieces into a doll on a playing card background. I encourage you to collage your image transfers anyway you wish.
I hope you have fun playing this month and trying something new! |
Visit the Mixed Media section of the Message Board to read more details about the challenge and sign up!
You don’t need to be an artist to join in the challenge. Instead you just need some time and desire to create. |
You’ll need somel of these to play with:
· Laser printer black & white image or text [you may wish to scan in something then print it out] · Ink jet colour print · Ink jet photo print · Magazine pages [any pic or text that takes your fancy] · Gel medium · Clear contact or packing tape [the wider thickness the better] · Patterned paper |
Preparation of background:
I’m using Heidi Swapp large playing cards for my challenges each month To prepare it for my image transfers, I first applied a rough coat of gesso · You might like to prepare your background with paint or other mediums |
Coloured magazine page with gel medium, transfer Step 1: Quite possibly my most favourite way to transfer images from the methods I’ve tried, there’s obviously unlimited image & text available to suit your needs I wanted a soft nature type image so tore out a portion of a perfume ad magazine page |

Step 2: · I tore down the magazine page to just the bits I wanted to transfer |
Step 3: · I then applied a thin and even coat of gel medium on my card base |
Step 4: Next I placed the magazine pieces face down on the card and rolled over the top with a brayer to smooth over any bubbles
I have seen other people slightly dampen the magazine page before adhering to the base, it helps both sides of the magazine paper dry evenly [you may like to try this] |
Step 5: Being quite impatient, I started to gently rub & peel back the edges of the magazine page after 5 minutes - the theory is the longer you leave it, the stronger the image transfer · You can rub carefully from the edges with either a damp cloth, wet finger or by squirting a little water and rubbing |
Step 6:
Work slowly and carefully, peeling back all the excess paper to reveal the image
· Work impatiently and harshly like me, and you’ll scratch off the image as well as the paper in parts, but adds character doesn’t it? |
Inkjet printed photo on photo paper with gel medium transfer
Step 1: · Print a colour photo on your ink jet printer using photo paper [I printed some older digital artwork of mine] and trim down to the section you want to transfer |
Step 2: Choose any piece of patterned paper · Work out whereabouts you want to have your image transferred |
Step 3: Apply an even coat of gel medium and then place you photo face down onto the patterned paper · Run over the photo with a brayer roller to flatten out any bubbles |
Step 4: Just for fun, add another magazine page over the top of the ink jet photo print · Cut out the section you want to transfer |
Step 5: Apply more gel medium over the patterned paper and the ink jet photo, then place your magazine image over the top · Roll over magazine image with a brayer to remove bubbles |
Step 6: · Leave for at least 5 minutes or until dry before picking and slowly peeling away the magazine paper and the photo paper |
Step 7: Work slowly and carefully, peeling back all the excess magazine paper & photo paper to reveal the images · Again, rub carefully from the edges with either a damp cloth, wet finger or by squirting a little water and rubbing |
Step 8: · You can see the soft image of the magazine page has left a dreamy florally haze behind my photo This obviously varies depending on the image chosen and the length of time you leave the paper to dry with the gel medium |
Laser black & white print on plain paper with contact/packing tape transfer Step 1: · I typed some text [using Ali E Handwriting font] and printed onto regular photocopy paper |
Step 2: Next I trimmed a piece of clear contact, peeled the backing and placed over the text · You could also use clear packing tape for this [the wider the better] |
Step 3: · With a stylus/ bone folder/back of a teaspoon, rub in a circular motion [burnish] over the text to transfer the type to the plastic |
Step 4: · Trim contact/packing tape to size |
Step 5:
Submerge the contact/packing tape in water for 5-10 minutes
Once fully wet, start rubbing gently and carefully to remove all of the paper
· Once the paper is removed, you’ll be left with clear plastic with your transferred image or text |
Inkjet coloured print on plain paper with gel medium transfer Step 1: I printed out a ‘Photoshop brush’ in a navy blue colour on regular photo copy paper · You could scan in any image or text, [even your own artwork] then print out using your ink jet colour printer |
Step 2: · Trim to size |
Step 3: · Add a even coat of gel medium to the area you want your image transferred |
Step 4: Leave to dry & transfer for at least 10 minutes then start to carefully peel and rub away paper · As with the other transfers, you can rub carefully from the edges with either a damp cloth, wet finger or by squirting a little water and rubbing |
Step 5: Keep rubbing away all paper until gone and you are left with your transferred image · Building up layers of transferred images will no doubt make for an interesting background and collage! |
Completing my collage: Step 1: First, I adhered the contact/packing tape transfer onto the corner of my playing card with gel medium Then I cut the patterned paper into a babushka doll shape and adhered with gel medium onto my playing card · I rolled over all layers with a brayer to ensure I flattened all bubbles |
Step 2: I then painted the face with gesso [base], white acrylic, then fluid acrylics [eyes, lips & hair] and pastel chalk [cheeks] Next I added outlines to define the edges of my large and mini dolls, with black conte and a little sepia ink and also extended and bolded some of the text To finish, I added some chalk pastels on both the doll and the background to both blend the colours and patch up messy bits Overall, I am happy with the dreamy and soft effect all the transfers have made in this months challenge There are so many other ways to effect image transfers and lots of video’s available [as I have recently discovered] so I hope you can find something to challenge yourself with this month! There seems to be lots of varying instructions depending on the instructor, but just have a play with a few basic items & experiment. Something will work for you, I just know it! |
