SHORT AND SWEET
There is a popular perception that good journaling is lengthy and detailed. But it doesn’t have to be. Good journaling is any combination of words that tells a story most effectively. And sometimes, that can be achieved using hardly any words at all.
In theory
Short, snappy journaling has impact. It creates atmosphere quickly, is easy to read and leaves a lasting impression. It works in the same way as an advertising slogan. Think Nike’s ‘Just do it’ campaign. Those three words say everything. ‘Just run as fast as you can towards the finish line’ has neither the impact, nor the universal appeal of ‘Just do it’.
Concise journaling is also fun to write, because it’s all about being witty rather than wordy. But that doesn’t mean you have to compromise sincerity in the process.
In practice
The words - ‘he’s like…whatever’ - that I’ve used on my layout about my nine-year-old son are still incredibly genuine and meaningful in context. It documents a catchphrase he uses on a daily basis, it reflects where he’s at right now – his age and accompanying attitude, and it captures a common colloquialism that defines the current generation, thus giving it a social dimension. All that in three little words.
Tips:
When you go to journal, consider whether there is one word, one phrase or one sentence that accurately and effectively encapsulates the story you want to tell.
Don’t be afraid to merge your title and journaling into one. Sometimes the right words can do both jobs.
One-liners work well for humorous layouts. Sometimes all you need to journal is your initial response to a photograph.
Only write lengthy journaling if want to and need to, not because you think you should. Work out exactly what it is you want to say, as opposed to what you think you should say, and try to do it as succinctly as possible. |

This month our INTERNATIONAL SCRAPPER is Nathalie Kalbach.
We asked Nat a few questions which you can read below:
Where are you from? Tell us a little about yourself and your hometown. I’m from Hamburg in Germany. I am 33 years old and I am happily married. I work as a paralegal and like my job a lot but I also need scrapbooking as a creative outlet. I also love reading and traveling and spending with my friends. Hamburg is a harbor city far up in the North. It is the second biggest city in Germany with many canals and over 2300 bridges. Some call it the Amsterdam or Venice of the North. |

How do you organise your albums and what brand albums do you use? I do have some albums but most of my layouts are laying in a big pile patiently waiting for me to put them away. I do have American Crafts albums that are 8.5x11 inches. I have an All About Me album, a Heritage album and a ‘everything that needs a home’ binder.
What is your biggest challenge in scrapbooking? I guess to use ribbon. I always want to use ribbon but somehow I just don’t think about it. And then if the layout is done and I remember, then I can’t find a place to adhere it, so I leave it out. I am ribbon impaired.
What are your 3 favourite products you are using at the moment? 1. Overlays—I can’t get enough of them. 2. Paint. 3. Lace—which is something different to ribbon.
What are the last 3 products that you bought? 1. Fancy Pants journaling stamps. 2. New Rouge De Garance papers. 3. Hambly Overlays.
What type of camera do you use? I have a tiny Kodak Easyshare Z740 which I just love.
If you could have lunch with 5 people who would they be? Oh that is a tough one. I will make this answer scrapbook related. 1. Celine Navarro 2. Vivian Bonder 3. Emily Falconbridge 4. Vicki Chrisman 5. Catherine Matthews Scanlon
I think all of them are really down to earth and I adore their artwork and think we would have a really funny and enjoyable meal together. And afterwards they would all teach me of course –that would be a very special dessert treat!
Do you have a blog address where we can read more about you? |

When did you begin Scrapbooking and how were you introduced? I started scrapbooking in 2004. I have always loved to create books with photos and journaling, but I had no clue that something like scrapbooking existed. After my wedding I was thinking what to do with my photos and my husband told me I could do a scrapbook with all the ephemera I had collected. I have no clue what he was talking about and started research –well….I got hooked right away! It took about a year though before I really started scrapping myself and cutting up papers.
How often do you spend on scrapbooking each week? I guess about 8 to 10 hours. I scrapbook almost every free minute!
What part of Scrapbooking do you love the most? That is a very good question. I do think I enjoy the process mostly. The whole getting into the layout. Thinking about it while creating and moving the things around on the page. It takes ages until I have finished a layout because I love using techniques but I but I enjoy the time and have no problems that it takes so long to complete. I get soaked into the feelings and memories of the photo or journaling I want to put on the layout and I love the creative flow.
Share your favourite layout. Why is it your favourite layout? My favourite is still It’s My Year. It is my favourite because I was very optimistic when I made it, I had a really rough time at the end of 2006. Usually I am an optimist and hapy but all this was just too much. I created the layout about solutions I told myself that I can’t be sad and pessimistic forever and I just decided that 2007 is going to be my year. Well it is 2007 and it has worked so far, so this is my favourite layout!
What is your favourite Scrapbooking book? Right now it is Artist Trading Card workshop by Bernie Berlin. I love all those techniques and cards shown in the book and I love trying to use those techniques on my scrapbook layouts. |
