CRYPTIC CLUES

In theory

Scrapbook journaling is usually very literal and very direct - ‘I love you’, ‘We had a great day out.’ It means exactly what it says. But it is possible, and fun, to take a more abstract approach. To drop cryptic clues which are open to interpretation, playing around with your words rather than simply documenting the facts.

There are a few different ways to achieve an abstract effect.

-                You can use a seemingly random collection of words - a word collage if you like, to create an impression rather than a coherent story. It comes across as a jumble of thoughts and works well with words of a similar grammatical type, for example adjectives like ‘beautiful, funny, loveable’ or nouns like ‘mother, artist, teacher’.

-                You can use snippets of sentences or phrases, for example, instead of saying ‘She needs something to believe in’ you could crop it to ‘needs something to believe in’. Your subject is still implied and you’ve successfully added an element of interest that wasn’t there before.

-                You can journal in a figurative sense, like I have in my layout ‘They ask what you do.’

In practice

The journaling:

‘They ask what you do and you say you drink a lot of coffee. Which isn’t exactly the answer they expected, but then, they were asking the wrong sort of question, weren’t they?’

is not meant to be taken literally at all. Although I’ve been asked this question many times I’ve never given the coffee answer. Not yet anyway. It’s intended more as a reflection on an issue I struggle with.

Tips:

-                Abstract journaling won’t suit every layout. It’s more about creating an ambiguous impression than accurately documenting facts, so if it’s important to capture specific information, a more direct approach might be better.

-                One way to come up with a collection of abstract kind of thoughts to use is to conduct a personal brainstorming session where you give yourself a time limit, focus on the topic and write down whatever pops into your head in that time.

-                Try not to over-think what you’re going to say or it might come across sounding too contrived. Abstract journaling works best if it’s more heartfelt than polished.

Text Box: NEW PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT— ATS TAPE GUN

We have a new product available in the store now that we are really excited about! We have investigated this tool and we are excited about the benefits of bringing you this easy to use and very cost effective new adhesive.

We recently asked a few questions on the message board about other tape runners that scrapbookers used and decided to compare the price of the ATS tape gun to various other tape runner brands including Herma Dotto, Tombow, 3L, Xyron, EZ and Kokuyo. Please bear in mind our cost calculation is based on a random sampling of products and is meant for illustration purposes only. Certainly everyone should compare the tape runner you currently use to the ATS tape gun to make your own comparison.

The ATS tape gun uses a whopping 108 feet tape refill so in order to ensure we fairly compared all brands, we converted each brand and refills to a base unit of 100 feet. We then calculated this over 10 rolls and then arrived at a per roll cost with each roll at 100 feet.

This week’s project is by Alison Goldsbro:

The price per roll (based on a base 100 feet roll AND including the tape gun) for the ATS below is $8.65. Other tape runners ranged between $9.76 and an incredible $31.00. Xyron, Herma Dotto and 3L were at the higher end. The closest unit to the ATS was the Kokuyo at $8.69.

The initial outlay of the ATS gun is $49.95 through Blue Bazaar. Over time as proved in our comparison of costs, this tool will certainly deliver you enormous savings over other popular tape runners.

We love this product! We love the cost savings especially but we also love that the tool is so easy to use. While it does look much bigger than standard scrapbooking tape runners, it is very light and not heavy at all to use.

We have an initial stock of these guns in the store now. When they sell out we will be restocking them on a regularly basis as our preferred adhesive tool. So if you find this item out of stock on the website, please email us at sales@bluebazaar.com.au with your request to purchase.
