POETIC LICENCE
When you think poetry you think rhyming words, right? But there’s a whole lot more to poetry than the cat on the mat, and plenty that you can pinch to apply to your journaling. Alliteration and assonance for starters.
In theoryAlliteration is all about repeating consonants in close proximity, like the letter ‘j’ in the phrase ‘jazz up your journaling’. Assonance is all about repeating vowel sounds, like, well like the ‘a’ in ‘alliteration and assonance’. The simple repetition of these sounds ties the words together and gives the journaling a kind of unique tempo. |

Which makes it the perfect device for generating catchy titles. Take the ever-popular ‘beach bum’ or ‘country bumpkin’. The reason these titles work so well, apart from them being entrenched clichés, is because the words have simple sounds in common.
But the usefulness of alliteration and assonance isn’t limited to titles. Their careful placement in the body of your journaling can also make it a pleasure to read. In practice
I’ve used both alliteration and assonance in the journaling on my layout, which reads: ‘Happiness is … a beautiful bunch of just because.’ There’s an obvious connection between the ‘b’ sounds in the ‘beautiful bunch of just because’ bit, but this is also supported by a couple of other connections. The ‘i’ sound in the ‘happiness is’ section of the title is repeated, as is the ‘e’ sound in beautiful and because. There’s also a loose link between the hard ‘p’ sounds in happiness and the hard ‘b’ sounds in the rest of the journaling, which isn’t a necessary connection, but helps to make the whole thing more effective. Although the journaling essentially means ‘I loved this bunch of flowers’ choosing specific words to convey the message in a way that has a sing-song effect not only makes it a more interesting read, but also a more satisfying one.
Tips:
Read your journaling aloud to see if it rolls smoothly off the tongue. Listen to how each word sounds individually and in relation to the others.
If the words you’ve written don’t sound quite right together use a thesaurus to find alternatives with similar meanings and better connections.
Use alliteration and assonance to enhance your journaling, but try not to overdo it or you’ll end up creating a tongue twister effect à la Dr Suess. |
