WRITING IN STYLE

In theory

How you format the journaling on your layouts can be just as important as what you write. Because your words are in written rather than spoken format you need to give them a voice using elements such as font and colour, and choose those that best speak your layout’s language.

For example, a script font will speak with a formal undertone, a grungy, graffiti kind of font will be more cool and casual; a big title will scream your message, a small one will whisper it; a bright colour combination will hint at fun and frivolity, a muted combination will be somewhat more serious; considerable space between your words will act like a visual pause delivering your message slowly, and a solid block of text will deliver it in one big rush.

Neutral journaling options, like handwritten text or computer-journaled type fonts, tend to place more emphasis on the words than the style. However, even seemingly neutral choices can have subtle connotations of their own. For example, handwriting that is tight and controlled will come across more seriously than one that is loose and loopy.

You shouldn’t underestimate the impact of alphas either. Their size, font and colour will influence how your journaling is interpreted, as will how you space them and the elements you place them with.

I’ve used bright colours in contrast with black, white and Kraft to set the tone, mixed up a variety of fonts and alphas for interest and used space and design to pace the delivery of the journaling.

In practice

In ‘built for soccer’ I’ve adopted a journaling style that reflects the light-hearted content, which reads: Cam’s lamenting his lack of speed in the pool after a particularly tough swimming lesson and Andrew says to him: ‘It’s okay buddy, us Ryans aren’t built for swimming. We’re built for soccer.’

Tips

-      Journaling is generally more effective if you incorporate it into your initial layout design rather than adding it as an afterthought.

-      Consider how you’d articulate your journaling if you were actually talking to someone face to face. Would you adopt a serious tone? Would you laugh? Would you wave your arms around, gesticulating madly? Would you pause for emphasis at particular intervals? Try to translate that to your layout design so your words are interpreted as you intend them to be.
