ART JOURNAL CHALLENGE TWO: Life Map

Welcome to this weeks Art Journal challenge which is about creating your life map using a map of Australia….or whatever country you live in.

1. start out finding a suitable map for your project. I used google and searched for ‘vintage map australia’. I then clicked on the IMAGES option on the left hand side of the screen so that only image results would show. I then found a map which was located on a website called Mapsorama

I found the below map which you can download and print out in either colour or black and white. Click on the map below to be taken to the website. Make sure you click again on the map on the Mapsorama website to see the LARGE view.  You can also see some other maps there that you may find more suitable for your project

2. I printed my map out in colour and adhered it to my page with gel medium. I used a brayer to roll over the page to smooth out any air bubbles and wrinkles.

3. I then used the a black sharpie pen to draw circles around key places where I lived and the years I spent there with a note about the important events of my life in that city, such as uni, first job and where I currently live.

I then used the 7gypsies green Coloeur Wash to colour the rest of the map and around my notes. I spritzed some water on my page to water the wash down even more. I also used a very wet brush to spread the colour around the page. The reason I used alot of water was so I could create a very translucent colouring and still have the map show through.

I used a little Viridian Green in the left hand side where you can see a variation in the green colouring. Use your paints as you prefer to create some colour variation.

4. I painted Indian yellow on each letter to stamp the letters L, I and E in the word LIFE

Dab bits of other colours on to your stamps to add colour variety.

5. Stamp out the letters alternating colours and using your paint brush to add more colour. As you can see below the Indian Yellow went on fairly translucent.

6. So this was one of those change your mind, ‘make it work’ moments. I decided I didn’t like the transparency of the yellow so stamped over each letter using the red paint.  You can still see the yellow show through also.

I used only the red paint to stamp the word MAP.

7. I then cut out a word strip from some of the 7gypsies papers in the kit – the same paper used in last weeks Art Journal page. I used gel medium to adhere the strip.

8. I then cut out another strip of 7gypsies paper (the harlequin design) and adhered it below the Most Memorable text.

I then used my charcoal stick to draw a border around the page.

9. I then used a thin wet paint brush to run over the charcoal to smooth out the pigment and create a painted looking border. I also used a white Ranger Ink essentials pen to draw the dashes around the border.

Below is the completed page.

I hope the above page provides some inspiration to create your own life map or even if you are not following the Art Journal challenge you may want to consider a similiar page theme for your scrapbook.

Thank you to Julie Fei-Fan Balzer for including Blue Bazaar on her blog in her weekly Art Journal Every Day post this week. Julie asked a few people what their top 5 must have supplies were along with a picture and sample art journal page.

Below is a picture of my top 5 products. You can read about my choices on Julie’s blog post HERE

Customer Pick – Michelle Hansen

One of the best parts about BB is getting an insight into what products other people purchase.

This week I was inspired by a collection of products chosen by Michelle Hansen.   Michelle chose 7gypsies kraft envelopes, German Scrap Butterflies and Art-C Wire & Cord spools. I notice wooden spools are featuring in a few CHA releases this year so this product will provide you with both the trims and the wooden spools for other uses once they are empty.

You can find the items pictured above by clicking the following links to the store:

Kraft envelopes:  HERE (currently on sale, 15% off)

German Scrap: HERE

ART-C Spools: HERE

Thank you Michelle for your inspiration!  As a thank you, a $5.00 voucher has been placed against your store account.
