ART JOURNAL CHALLENGE THIRTY TWO

Welcome to this week’s art journal page.

This week I used good old crayons on my page – cheap and colourful.

My page this week is abstract in design.  I have to say it was extremely relaxing to do. The idea for the page didn’t really evolve until the first photo below which is why I forgot to take other photos before it.

You might notice some scribbles on the lower right hand page – this is where I had scribbled with a pen that I was bringing back to life. I find lots of scribbling usually gets the ink flowing again from pens that get ‘trashed’ in mixed media use.  I had gessoed over it but you can still see some of it showing through.

I started this page with the black dots you can see below. The whole concept of this page was to make “marks”. I would take one colour at a time and then mark a shape or line. Then I would use my finger to smudge the colour….almost like I was pulling the colour out from the centre of the mark.  Using this method meant the colours were being blended into each other and also morphing into different shapes.

The randomness of colour and shape was relaxing to play with.  I’ve shown a progression of photos below and then the final page.

I took this photo of the orange crayon showing before and after – how I had made the mark and then blended it into the page.

Completed page!  I would probably skip the black dots on another page like this.

In doing pages like this, it’s not so much the completed page that gives me ideas but when you zoom into parts of what you create you can find elements you like that can be used as an idea for something else. Such as the close up shot below of the top left corner of this page – I liked the blend of colours of blue and pink.
