GUIDELINES FOR THE CHALLENGE

1. There are no rules!

2. This is not a class, but instead a group of art journalers joining in challenges and most importantly motivating and inspiring ourselves and each other.

3. Challenge prompts will go up on the 1st of each month and you are encouraged to use that topic as much as you like on as many pages that you like. There are no quantity requirements but at least one would be a good start

4. If you find useful resources on the internet or in books, please feel free to share. I will keep a list below so we can build a great resource.

5. Don’t let terminology or products scare you off. Use what you have and adapt.

6. If you load images to the BB gallery put them into the Mixed Media category. You can also load your images to flickr, your blog or any other hosting site. Just share your link in the message board thread so we can all have a look also.

POSTING IMAGES IN THE BB GALLERY:

The gallery accepts images at a certain size. You should set your images for around 500x500 pixels and no larger than 126kb. To help reduce the file size you should use any option that says something along the lines of “save for web”.

If you need help email me at sales@bluebazaar.com.au and I will be happy to look at your photo and help sort out any problems.

LINKING IMAGES FROM THE BB GALLERY TO THE THREAD:

1. Go to the gallery that your image is uploaded in. i.e Mixed Media

2. Right click your mouse over the image of your picture and select from the menu COPY LINK (or words to that effect)

3. Go to the message board thread for that challenge and paste that link you have copied.

RESOURCE LINKS
http://www.gis.net/~scatt/sketchbook/links2.html
http://www.drawspace.com/ you will need to create a login to be able to read the lessons online. The lessons are free if you read them online or you can pay to download them.

JANUARY CHALLENGE:

Creating simple abstract backgrounds and draw a focal point image.

The inspiration for this challenge came from 3 sources:

http://www.drawspace.com/lessons/lesson.php?id=c09

http://www.jazzgreen.com/painting.html

http://www.asil-art.com/Galerie1.html

The lesson on Drawspace is to draw a Starfish. It looks a little cartoonish in the lesson but you can adapt it to look any way you want. I ended up making mine more of a flower. It is more so about starting to draw with simple shapes and lines.

One of my goals is to start learning to draw simple things that I can add to my artwork or even my scrapbooking.

Below are some photographs of the steps I did to complete my first journal card.

Like I said this is NOT a class. I am not an art teacher Very Happy

The steps to my card are:

1. gesso card

2. pick out 3 colours within the same range - green and squirt a bit in each 1/3 rd of the card.

3. roll over each colour with my foam roller. I didn't clean my roller between colours but instead used it over each other to give more of a blended look.

4. I spritzed with water at the end to soften the paint "streaks". I find spritzing with water helps paint blend alot. Btw I am referring to acrylic paint here.

5. I then drew the starfish/flower exactly how the drawspace lesson showed it. I drew mine on some old text book paper as my base.

6. I then used twinkling h2o's to colour in the starfish/flower and the cut it out and used gel medium to adhere it to my card. I used a few different colours on the purple section to highlight ends and sides for some variation.

7. I journaled with white pen at the bottom of my card and drew dashes around the flower edge.

Hey presto simple card finished.

Remember you can create your background with any medium. It does not have to be paint.

EXTRA ART JOURNALING:
Btw if you are looking for extra motivation to art journal you can join in on these too:

http://suziblu.typepad.com/a_lovely_dream/2009/01/2009-its-all-happening.html (a book a month! YIKES!)

also Misty Mawn is doing a journal entry for every day of January. You can scroll down to read more about it. Her blog is here: http://mistymawn.typepad.com/

http://www.collagediva.com/souljournal/

Now go create!

Glass Slam DRAWING, did you mention that drawing was part of this before I signed up LU, AHHHHhhhhh I cant even draw a stick figure to save myself... OK I shall create an abstract background, but draw... I wonder if scribble can be classed as "ART"... I may have to improvise here and I also have to ponder on this theme at least overnight... Though I do love a challenge so stick figures it may be...LOL

never fear Sarah I can't draw a straight line with a ruler. Seriously - look at all my layouts, they are always crooked Laughing

Have a look at the drawing lesson though. It starts with a simple circle and builds from there. I used my eraser a fair bit Wink

You can do it !

I love drawspace such a good place for inspiration and help.

Okay so I looked at the topic last night before I went to bed, then got up an hour later because I had so many ideas going round in my head I had to get them down on paper. So next time I will make sure I read the topic in the morning LOL

need I remind you that my art teacher questioned my decision to go to art school when he saw my first life drawing????? Laughing

drawing is about practice practice practice! Why not do some tracing to get you started - its a great way to give you an idea of how pencil strokes are made. I know that helped me immensely, as well as just trying to copy basic drawings from "how to" books. Now I LOVE drawing and I find it super relaxing!!

Don't stress - this is all about having fun and trying new things!!

When he has done, I shall begin!!!! Can't wait!!!!

I am absolutely ADORING those greens by the way - delicious!

Hi Ladies
I've been very creative today (thank you to my cherubs for giving me some playtime) Very Happy I created this double page, it's been a really really really long time since I've dabbled in this kind of art and I realised how much I miss it Crying or Very sad Now I have to clean up my mess Evil or Very Mad

Sorry about the photo... a bit dodgy... it's been a while since I've used my camera too Wink

The left page has a quote I found in my stash... "How sublime the sunflower's beauty as she achieves her destined climb; how flexible and resilient, as she endures the storms of life. How freely she gives herself, yet with little survives. Such a blessing is my golden friend... how glorious... how wise" author unknown

Here's the link for my January journal entry: http://www.bluebazaar.com.au/bb/album_showpage.php?pic_id=19506

I decided to use my journal as an ideas book.I have uploaded a page from the journal and I am going to convert one of the ideas onto canvas, which I will upload when it is finished.

Holey cow girls, you are all on a roll and your pieces are looking too good too. Love Jacqui's idea of putting them onto canvases... Clever woman..
I too have been swirling ideas around mu head all day whilst I was visiting mum and dad for the day, so tonight I shall start something..
However I would like to share this link because if I could I draw I would love to draw like her...
